Instinct Born from Experience

Traditionally, a master tailor learns to cut and shape a garment by eye – guided by proportion rather than strict measurement. Precision remains essential, but judgement determines harmony.

“Rock of Eye” refers to that Instinct born from experience. It is not guesswork. It is confidence developed through repetition and time.

After more than three decades working in Stellenbosch and internationally, Coenie Snyman earned the experience to found Rock of Eye in 2021.

It was a matter of timing — when the opportunity came, and the pieces were in place, it made sense to start something independently. Rock of Eye reflects that decision — centred on focus and clarity.

Rooted in Stellenbosch, the wines carry a strong sense of place, shaped by the vineyards, long-standing relationships, and consistency. They combine drinkability with ageability, and are made to be shared at the table.

Measurement provides the information. Experience provides the context. The winemaker's role is to allow the wine to find its own voice.

Measured by Feel

Sometimes you don’t need to measure.
Sometimes you just know.

“Rock of Eye” is a technical term tailors use to express the ability to immediately see and understand tasteful proportions, using instinct born from experience.

In any discipline — design, architecture, farming, photography — there comes a point where experience sharpens judgement, and decisions become more instinctive.

Doing less requires confidence. With experience comes trust in the vineyards and the people behind them, with minimal intervention in the cellar to let the wines reflect their place.

Rock of Eye is born from experience and measured by feel.
